This series of buildings started to be built in the early 1980s and can be found in all of Riga’s new housing estates. The buildings in this series were designed entirely in Latvia. The first 119 series building was completed in 1980 at 11 Vaidelotes Street. 5-9 storey buildings can be found, as well as 10 storey buildings in some cases. The 119 series has gained its popularity for its successful layout and spacious rooms, as well as for the possibility to carry out large-scale apartment conversions without the fear of demolishing partition walls.
Series 119 is the only Soviet-era apartment series in Latvia that continues to be built today, albeit with slight modifications.
The 119 series is considered to be the most modern representative of prefabricated buildings, the apartment areas exceeded the Soviet Union’s norm for apartment areas (SNIP) by 15%, and permission to build such spacious apartments was obtained through tough negotiations with the All-Union institutes.
