The Lithuanian design was based on the Moscow 464 series, but the Lithuanians and then the Latvians improved it. When these houses were built, the public perception was that the Lithuanians built better. Maybe that is why these houses, which were slightly different and slightly better than the previous ones, were called Lithuanian.
These series of buildings were built from the early 1960s and, unlike other, less common series of buildings, they can be found in almost every district of Riga. The Lithuanian design is characterised by five-storey large-panel buildings with plasterboard partitions.
A distinction is made between old and new buildings of Lithuanian design. The difference is that the old Lithuanian houses have balconies, while the new ones have loggias. The apartments in these houses are compact in terms of layout, which might seem too cramped to some, but the average running costs of the apartments are comparatively lower. The buildings of the series are mainly located in Purvciems, Agenskalns, Imanta, Dzirciems, Bolderaja, Ziepniekkalns, Vecmilgravis, Sarkandaugava, Ķengarags, as well as in Jugla and Botāniskā dārza.
